Acubody Therapies Announce That A Sports Massage Is Not Only For Sports Injury

Acubody Therapies of Holborn has announced that a sports massage is not used exclusively for sports injuries and toning muscles prior to taking part in sporting events.

Acubody Therapies of Holborn, London, has announced that a sports massage is not only for sports injuries. Although primarily thought of as a London sports injury clinic, the therapists there use a sports massage for a wide range of similar injuries which can be caused as a result of a variety of activities.

For example, leading therapist Duncan McGechie says that sports injuries can affect a muscle or group of muscles which will vary from one sport to another. This depends on the sport being played, so for instance, a footballer will tend to suffer injury more often to the legs while a tennis player may be more likely to suffer injury to arms and shoulders.

However, as McGechie says, there are many other activities which can cause similar injuries to those suffered while playing a sport, such as gardening. It is very easy to want to carry on digging in order to finish a vegetable plot, for instance, even while in considerable pain. The most sensible thing to do if suffering pain is to stop doing whatever is causing it, but for many gardeners the end justifies the means. In the case of digging, this can mean that the arms and shoulder muscles can suffer damage in a similar way to a tennis player, and therefore the treatment would be much the same in both cases.

Injuries similar to sports injuries can also be sustained by carrying a heavy load over a distance, DIY (similar to gardening in the sense that the urge is to just get that bedroom decoration finished), or – believe it or not – sitting hunched over a computer for long periods, which is common for many people in London. In many of these cases, a sports massage will help to give considerable relief.

A London sports massage is derived from Swedish massage and is a deep form of massage which focuses on muscles that have suffered a large degree of stress and over-use. Sports people often over-train, and this can lead to the muscles becoming rigid. A sports massage can help to relax the muscles and make them more flexible. It increases blood flow and helps to increase oxygen and the return of other nutrients to the muscles which increases the rate of healing and reduces swelling and inflammation.

In addition, a sports massage helps spasms and cramp which are quite common with over-training, and it also helps to eliminate waste products such as lactic acid and uric acid which are a natural result of exercise. Scar tissue, which is normal in a severe injury, can also be lessened with massage.

There are also psychological benefits. A sports massage will make the athlete feel more relaxed and confident and help to focus the mind on the job in hand. This doesn’t happen instantly, but the following day there is a much greater feeling of wellbeing. An athlete who has a clear mind will outperform one who is stressed.
