Edmonton, AB, May 16, 2025 – The Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) joins the community in Alberta and beyond in celebrating the World Family Doctor Day (WFDD). First declared by the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) in 2010, this annual commemoration brings attention to the outstanding contributions of family doctors in health care systems around the world.

Family physicians care for patients and nurture their relationships with them through every stage of their lives. Their central role in the lives of Albertans is the foundation of an integrated health care system that is accessible, comprehensive, continuity-based, and patient-centred.

“With family doctors providing 70 percent of health care in Alberta, World Family Doctor Day is an opportunity for us to express our gratitude and appreciation for their impact on patients, families, and communities. Family doctors are the constant health provider in an ever-changing and overburdened system. It is more important than ever to show our support for them and celebrate their crucial contributions,” says ACFP Executive Director Terri Potter.

The ACFP invites Albertans to celebrate their own family doctors through the ACFP’s signature public awareness campaign—“Family Docs Rock!"—and submit their stories of gratitude at www.familydocsrock.ca. For more than 10 years, the campaign, which honours and recognizes the unique and trusted family doctor-patient relationship, has received hundreds of heartwarming stories from Fort McMurray to Longview and all across Alberta.
