Lugano inked a contract with Tether on March 3rd, 2022, to encourage blockchain adoption in the city. Over 200 shops and companies in Lugano are expected to accept cryptocurrency for products and services under the "Plan B" initiative. Besides allowing Lugano citizens to pay their taxes using cryptocurrency, the initiative will also accept payments for parking fines, public services, and student tuition expenses.

Lugano Mayor Michele Foletti earlier indicated that the current collaboration with Tether will assist the city not only in enhancing its efforts in financial innovations but also make the city more appealing to businesses and people interested in using cryptocurrency.
