Plano, TX, May, 2016 – People who are obese may face a myriad of potential complications over the course of their lifetimes. From diabetes and hypertension to some forms of cancer, many of the possible associated conditions are quite serious and potentially fatal. Researchers have also found a strong link between painful, chronic gallbladder disease and obesity, adding to the list of reasons why getting weight in check is a wise idea.

“Getting control of weight through diet, exercise or surgical intervention can lower the risk of gallbladder disease,” explains Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon of Abdominal Surgery Specialists, a part of the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery. “In some cases, shedding weight can reduce or eliminate the symptoms of this condition.”

Gallbladder disease is a term that technically describes several different conditions, including chronic gallstones. While it is possible to remove the gallbladder to eliminate the pain associated with attacks, avoiding those attacks in the first place is the wiser path to take.

“Gallbladder disease, like many of the possible complications of obesity, can dramatically impact day-to-day life,” says Dr. Nicholson. “Losing weight through diet or medical intervention, eating right and incorporating exercise into the routine can all help keep this condition at bay.”

Should chronic pain prompt the need for gallbladder removal, people will find the surgery is largely a simple procedure. Laparoscopic techniques have made this procedure less invasive while potentially lowering surgical side effect risks. It is quite feasible to lead a healthy, full life without the gallbladder to assist in digestion.

People who are obese should speak with their healthcare providers for assistance. Taking action to lose weight can reduce risks for gallbladder disease and a host of other medical concerns.

Founded by Dr. Nick Nicholson, one of the country’s leading weight loss surgeons and co-author of “Weight Loss Surgery: The Real Skinny,” Abdominal Surgery Specialists provides patients with a variety of options to treat conditions including gallbladders, hernias, reflux and obesity.
