Santa Cruz, CALIF. (May 9, 2024) - Since their introduction to the general public a little more than a year ago, foundation models have been eagerly embraced by developers working in the AI space. According to Evans Data’s recently released AIML Development Survey report over three-quarters of AI developers have used foundation models in their AI projects. This survey of over 400 developers actively working on AI projects also found that model standardization was the top cited benefit of using foundation models.

However, the second most cited benefit was the ability to customize. Though the two top benefits may seem in conflict, foundation models actually offer a unique blend of standardization and customization, making them particularly powerful in the tech landscape. Standardization allows models to serve as a robust and consistent base for a wide range of applications, ensuring reliability and interoperability across different platforms and systems. This standard base ensures that developers have a solid, well-understood starting point for their work. On the other hand, customization capabilities allow these models to be fine-tuned and adapted for specific tasks or industries, providing the flexibility to meet unique needs and challenges. The ability to integrate with other AI techniques and model re-use were also rated highly.
