Batteries come in different shapes, sizes, and form; there are small batteries that make wristwatches work, batteries for TV’s remote control, battery for automobiles, etc.

A battery is device that contains one or more electrochemical cells that converts stored chemical energy into electricity. There are 2 types of batteries, the primary battery (also called as disposable battery) and the secondary battery (rechargeable battery). The former is designed for one-time use, while the latter is designed for multiple uses.
Batteries come in different shapes, sizes, and form; there are small batteries that make wristwatches work, batteries for TV’s remote control, battery for automobiles, etc. And today, batteries are all over the place, they power our wall clock, electric razors, smoke detectors, thermostats, mp3 players, mobile phones, laptops computers, digital cameras, and the list goes on.
Rechargeable Batteries
With the rise to popularity of portable devices, from mobile phones to smartphones, from laptops to notebooks and tablets, from mp3 players to mp4s, from point-and-shoot digital cameras to DSLRs, the need for rechargeable batteries has grown substantially in the past decade.
Types of Rechargeable Batteries
Though it’s quite obvious how rechargeable batteries work, not all of this type of battery are made equal. The first wave of rechargeable battery is the NiCd battery, but they become quite inconvenient as they cause memory effect as lose capacity fast when not fully re-charged from time to time. The second wave of rechargeable battery, NiMH battery, came with a higher cell capacity and minimally affects memory, but they don’t have god shelf life. NiCd and NiMH batteries can be quite tricky to charge, and you must be very careful not to overcharge them, as it can cause the lead to decrease its capacity. To stop this from happening, some chargers now come with a switch to trickle charge or turn off automatically when the charging is complete. Also, these batteries have to be reconditioned to, which menas they should be discharged completely and then recharge again to minimize loss of capacity.
The third and newest type of rechargeable battery, which is commonly used in mobile devices today is the LiOn battery, it has a long life, holds power better, can operate and work at higher voltages and above all, comes in small and light package. They come in sophisticated chargers that keep them from getting overcharged and without the need of reconditioning.
Basically, all high-quality portable devices in the market today last longer with this kind of battery. Rechargeable batteries will die eventually, though it may take hundreds or even a thousand of recharges before it happens. And when that time comes, they should be properly disposed.
