Keep your home in tip top shape this winter by performing this list of maintenance tasks to keep your family warm & safe all winter long.

If you own a snow blower, be sure to check the manual for any routine pre-season maintenance suggestions. Also, make sure you have easy access to your shovel and have plenty of kitty liter on hand to help prevent slips. (this will not harm your concrete like salt can)

Change your ceiling fans to rotate downward (clockwise) so that it pushes the warm air into the room and help your energy costs.

Make sure your furnace has a tune up , change the filter and make sure to lower your thermostat when nobody will be home to save yourself some money.

If you have a window AC unit, take it out for the season so you can completely close your window. You don't want that warm air to escape!

If you have screens in your windows or in your storm door, make sure you switch over to the glass panels.

Turn off exterior water and disconnect your hoses to prevent pipes from freezing.
Check for drafts around your windows and doors. Use weather stripping or caulk to seal the drafts.

Schedule a chimney cleaning with a professional to prevent build up.

Spray WD40 in your exterior locks to prevent them from freezing.

Lower your hot water heater to 120 degrees which will help prevent wear and tear on the pipes.

Don't forget to move all of your outdoor cushions, umbrellas, etc into your shed or garage.
Always make sure your gutters are cleaned out too.

If you haven't changed out the batteries in your smoke detectors, now is the time. Especially with holiday lights, candles and fireplaces going. Check the carbon monoxide detector as well.

You also want to be prepared if the power goes out. If you have a generator, make sure it's in good working order.

Protect your floors with door mats inside and out so you don't have wet boots, gloves, etc dripping all over your home.

Insulation can deteriorate throughout the years so make sure yours is still in good shape, if not, add more to your attic and/or crawlspace.

Trim any tree limbs to prevent them from falling on power lines if they become too heavy with ice and/or snow.

Remember, preventative tasks may take some time but it will save you money and quite possibly a lot of money and hassle in the long run.
