Education & conservation are cited as the common reasons to keep animals in captivity; however many critics like Jay Sawyer view zoos to be outdated relics of a less enlightened era. “Humans as a species do not have the moral right to let animals suffer simply because we’re curious to know more about them,” says Jay Sawyer, an active supporter of animal rights from Chester Dr, IN, who has been fighting for animal welfare from the past many years. As the number of animals dying in zoos has rapidly increased in the last few years, he strongly feels that it is high time we re-consider the dated way (zoos) of showing our children all the beautiful animals in the world.

In the wild, animals like elephants walk almost thirty miles a day, lions and tigers run, climb, or roam around several miles to hunt; however when these animals are kept in small cages in the zoos, they do not get to do these things which are natural as well as important to them. Living in cramped spaces where they don’t have enough opportunities to exercise or to keep their minds active often results in a condition called “zoochosis” where they act strangely & sometimes even hurt themselves out of boredom or frustration.

According to Jay Sawyer, closing all the zoos in the county would be an effective step in freeing animals from the cruelty that they are often subjected to.
