[ARDMORE, 12/20/2017] - A group of researchers looked into National Practitioner Data Bank claims data and physician specialty and found that the average payment for successful malpractice claims has risen by almost 25%.

Raising Payment

The study, among other interesting findings, revealed that the average payout for successful malpractice claims reached about $287,000 in 1992-1996 and ballooned to $353,000 in the 2009-2014 period.

For every fourteen malpractice claim, there is one that pays out over a million dollars. In 2012, in fact, more than $3 was spent in malpractice payouts, totaling one payout for every 43 minutes.

Neurosurgeons and OB/GYN, the researchers noted, faced a higher risk of being sued mainly because of the nature of the conditions they cater to as opposed to lack of training of poor quality of care. In fact, payments happen in one out of eight claims in both specialties.

The lead author, Harvard Medical SchoolDr. Adam Schaffer said this trend could be a key influence of tort reform on medical malpractice lawsuits.
