It would be very agreeable if we can just bring our dogs to pet grooming salons for regular grooming. However, we will have to allot a big budget (hundreds of dollars no less) to make this happen. The good news is you can still keep your dogs smelling good and groomed the DIY way. You will need dog health supplies and grooming supplies for this such as a good set of nail clippers, hair clippers, toothbrush and toothpaste, brush, comb and shampoo. The initial investment on such dog supplies may cost a bit, but you can recoup this in a short time. There are grooming kits available for first time pet owners.

Dog’s teeth need regular care which can be done through brushing once or twice a week. This controls tartar and plaque buildup and prevent setting off some health issues.

Most dogs love to bathe and a good dog shampoo is necessary to keep them clean and smelling good. The hundreds of shampoo varieties can put you in a quandary. Choose the shampoo that will address your pet’s needs – bad odor, flea or tick control, dry skin, etc. Too much bathing can take out your dog’s natural oil which keeps the skin and fur healthy. Bathing once a month is sufficient. Dry them off with absorbent towel so they will not use your couch for more drying.

Some breeds are prone to leaky tear ducts. There are dog health supplies available to treat this problem to keep the eye clean of buildups that could set off infections.

Dogs with long coats need a good dog comb or brush to keep their fur clean and shiny. Dog combs and brush come in a variety of styles and teeth size. Pick one that will be most suitable for your pet’s fur type.

Dog nails should also be kept trimmed. A good nail trimmer looks like pruning shears having curved blades for efficient nail trimming.

One of the better brands of electric hair clippers available in the market is Lucky Dog. It comes in standard blade but other sizes can be ordered. The clippers should be maintained regularly for continued efficiency. Clean it with commercial lubricants and solutions available in most pet shops or clean the hair from the blades with a toothbrush. If you are not confident that you can fully clip your dog’s fur at home, then a trip to the grooming salon twice or thrice a month will be necessary. In between these visits, you might need to snip a few hair covering the eyes. A good pair of sharp scissors will do the job nicely.

However, if you feel you have the skill and patience for it, trimming you dog’s hair at home can definitely save you much money? Who knows, you can even make a career of it and soon have a line of eager friends and neighbors wanting to have their pet’s hair trimmed.
