There has been a lot of discussion in the news lately about ways to provide better programs for youth. While there are many ideas for how we can teach young people important skills like leadership, teamwork, and conflict resolution, there is one local program that is having success teaching all three while giving kids a way to get off the couch and get in shape. Dr. Tae Yun Kim is the owner and director of the Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy in Fremont, California. She is a coach, motivator, and speaker who lives by the motto, “He can do it, she can do it, why not me?” Dr. Kim is a motivational speaker and lecturer. She has also published several motivational books that have been translated and published around the world. Now, she is focusing her attention on young people in the United States. At her academy, she runs a youth development program that encourages young people to develop martial arts skills along with personal qualities that will help them succeed.

At Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy, students are treated with respect and given responsibility. Dr. Tae Yun Kim and her staff of expert martial artists meet with each student individually. They often meet with the student’s parents as well, depending on the student’s age. They work with the student to set athletic goals such as learning to block and kick, and personal goals, such as learning to stay calm under stress or learning to think before they speak to ensure kind speech. Students work in groups to develop a supportive team atmosphere with instructors serving as positive role models. All students get one on one attention as well, to track their progress towards their goals.
