The MALA Easy Locator is a tool designed for the purpose of locating underground services before a contractor commences any sort of excavation work. The Easy Locator uses GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) to locate all types of services, including, very importantly, non-metallic services, which are becoming more widespread.
The advances in design and construction of buried utilities have resulted in the use of more non-metallic materials which are difficult, if not impossible, to find with other tools. Sygma Solutions is proud to have been appointed the only MALA GPR service agent and supplier in the UK.
Ground penetrating radar is the only technology that does not require either electromagnetic radiation from the utility or a direct connection to the utility. Thus, in effect, it can work anywhere and locate anything.
Cable avoidance is a general term that has come to be used for the avoidance of all underground services, including those that are not cables, such as sewers, water pipes, gas pipes, and so on. Whatever you call it, avoiding striking any sort of utility when carrying any excavation work is critical. At the very least, striking an underground service is going to cause delay on a contract while the utility concerned sends out a team to repair it, and can result in considerable other scenarios as well.
Think businesses with no electricity and no internet connection just for a start. This can lead to large claims for damages. The contractor may also receive penalties from the main contractor for delays and more. It is not unknown for a business to have collapsed as a result of an underground utility strike.
There are also the situations where a cable strike has caused serious injury to workers on site, and on occasion these have been fatal. For example, striking a gas pipe can result in fire and explosion, and can demolish whole buildings.
The MALA Easy Locator can be folded down so that it can be transported easily in the back of an estate car to move it easily from one site to another. The Easy Locator can be used to locate targets at depths of as much as 4 metres below the surface and as small as 3 cm in diameter.
