INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED SCULPTOR

EXHIBITS RECENT WORK AT ILIAD NEW YORK

New York, NY --- Strong-Cuevas, whose work has been acclaimed by critics around the world and whose powerful, dramatic sculptures are in numerous public and private collections internationally, is exhibiting her latest work at ILIAD New York. ILIAD is a prominent 57th Street gallery recognized for its exquisite exhibitions combing the best of classicism and modernism in their epic style of presentations. “Certainly one of the finest living modernist sculptors today is Strong-Cuevas,” said Andrea Zemel, artist and co-founder of ILIAD.” Zemel is actively involved in the curation of ILIAD's program of Contemporary Arts, which now includes a strong selection of works by Strong-Cuevas.

“We are extremely pleased to have an opportunity to exhibit the sculptures of Strong-Cuevas. Our many clients have praised her work and are acquiring them for their collections,” said Adam Brown, co-founder of ILIAD. An ardent antiquarian and classicist, Brown envisions the classical world revived in a perennial modernist canon combining a love of the ancient world with a passion for modernism and contemporary arts to achieve an ambitious vision at ILIAD. As a platform for the pursuit of art, culture, and visionary achievement, the work of Strong-Cuevas fits ideally with our artistic mission.”

Phyllis Braff wrote the following about Strong-Cuevas’ sculpture in the New York Times: “One is impressed with the ambitious program of seeking a sculpture that blends architecture and perfectly keyed abstraction with the potent emotionalism resulting from human-face themes…. Creative use of negative space has been one of the artist's favorite devices. It is particularly striking, for it adds intensity, and often a strange force as well…. Strong-Cuevas' bronze sculptures contain a great deal of psychic energy. Isolated facial features removed from context, enclosed mysterious spaces, meticulously polished surfaces and a certain ritualistic quality all help to generate this spiritual feeling."

And the art critic Donald Kuspit wrote: “Strong-Cuevas' sculpture is rooted in primitive art, with its bold structures, expressive directness, communal symbolism, and conviction of cosmic absolutes.”
About her own approach to her work, Strong-Cuevas wrote in an essay in Art Times that “creation begins with a wish, a desire to do something, to make something, to see beyond the immediate reality. If we are lucky, it will open a door to a stream of thought that is inspiration. We inspire, we breathe in ideas.”

And those ideas are made magnificently and aesthetically manifest in her recent work at ILIAD which includes Running Head (bronze, antique black patina, 16 x 8 x 4 inches); Half Telescope (bronze, antique black patina, stainless steel eye, 12 ½ x 6 ½ x 6 inches); Fusion (bronze, dark orange patina, 26 ½ x 19 x 19 inches); Windows (bronze, iron oxide, Prussian blue patina, 39 x 25 x 23 inches); Midnight (bronze, indigo patina, stainless steel base, 22 x 9 x 11 inches); Petals Two (stainless steel, fabricated; two figures attached to a stainless steel base, 55 x 41 x 20 inches).
