Participation of women in social and economic life of the United States changed in the 18th century. The progressive growth of the country contributed to more active participation of women in labor force and fight for womens rights. Thus, the period is characterized with many changes in the position of American women in the society.
The Market Revolution provided an opportunity for women to earn money by completing the female-oriented tasks, such as making butter, clothing and selling home-made goods (Antracoli, 2006). Thus, the households acquired double-income. The cult of domesticity shifted to dual responsibility, where women had to complete the household roles and work outside home (Miller, 2008). The labor reform movement further increased the women involvement in the labor force and granted them payments. In fact, women were the major drive force of reformation (Antracoli, 2006). Furthermore, the reform movement created a venue for women to share their desires and willingness to participate in social and political life. Thus, the suffrage united a number of countries, including the United States, in the desire to defend the womens right to become active members of community through voting (Miller, 2008). Women finally recognized their value and worth, and entered the struggle for equality.
The period is beneficial for the history of womens rights because it presented the opportunities to voice their desires and gradually become active workforce. Although the labor market offered only manual jobs, women started earning money and learning new skills. Moreover, suffrage increased participation of women in social and political life, and enabled their future fight for their rights.
