15th August 2018, New Delhi: Stri Shakti is a non-profit organization working for implementing govt. welfare schemes in several Indian states. It is working for women empowerment of women and children’s welfare in states like Punjab, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Delhi.

Stri Shakti is a registered NGO, which was created on 11th February 1993. It is mainly engaged in the upliftment of women and the education of children. It aims at bringing up women of lower middle-class, below the poverty line, who cannot afford basic necessities because of lack of awareness, illiteracy, and unemployment.

The main work of Stri Shakti is to organize self-help groups in which women can work in their spare time and earn a valuable livelihood. Activities for self-help groups include preparation of food for schools, canteens, and Anganwadis.

Apart from women, the other main focus of the NGO is the welfare of poor children. It is helping in implementing the ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services Scheme), which is the main national government scheme for the welfare of poor children below the age of six. It seeks to provide young children with an integrated package of services such as pre-school education and health care.

Since the mother has a major role to play in the welfare of children, the ICDS program extends to nursing mothers, pregnant women, and adolescent girls. This program is implemented via a huge network of agencies called as Anganwadis. Stri Shakti is supplying weaning food and cooked food to Anganwadis. These are prepared by Stri Shakti through its Self Help Groups (SHG). Every SHG is composed of ten women.

Another scheme targeting small children is the Mid-Day Meal Scheme (MDMS). It is aimed at increasing school enrolment and attendance. Stri Shakti supplies cooked midday meals to children studying in aided and government schools. Using this program, it addresses issues of malnutrition and encourages disadvantaged children to participate in school activities. Stri Shakti has made a major difference by feeding over one lakh children in the city of Ahmedabad, eighty thousand children in the district of Valsad and three lakh children studying in various schools, run by Delhi Municipal Corporation.

The organization is a leading NGO for women in Punjab and other parts of India. Its main program is the Gender Resource Centre (GRC). The Government of Delhi has begun a program for a social development called as Samajik Suvidha Sangam (SSS), which is a single window agency for many government social welfare schemes. With the help of SSS, the Stri Shakti has set up GRC centres. It focuses on health camps, skill enhancement, women empowerment, and legal awareness. Some of the GRC programs are beautician course, computer training, non-formal education, tailoring, health camps, Suvidha Kendra and Nutritional camp.
Other programs of Stri Shakti are catering to Delhi secretariat, Rohini Hostel and hospitals in Pune, Ratnagiri, etc. For more details, one can contact the website www.strishakti.in.
