The Birds and Bees, The Flowers and Coronavirus Earth Day 2021

The interconnectedness of life. Earth Day is a day of teaching!

It is Spring! All around us are blooming things, growing things and pollen so thick that everyone's car looks chartreuse.
This year is the 51st anniversary of Earth Day. It started in the USS in 1970. One year after the Cuyahoga River, which flows through Cleveland caught fire. No, the water didn't burn, all the industrial chemicals that were being dumped into it did. Industries did not immediately take responsibility for this filthy and dangerous situation. So in 1970, a US Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, introduced legislation
to proclaim a National Teach-in about the environment, called Earth Day. It happened on College and University campuses all around the US, and in many High Schools. April 22, 1970 was that first Earth Day. There had been a UN proclamation the year before, but 1970 was a
huge call to action.

We missed a year of real action in 2020 due to Coronavirus. Maybe, if we look closely at the results of less industrial action over the past year, we will observe some cities with
cleaner air, and cleaner water ways. In some settings, some species of animals became more visible.

That first Earth Day , established the first full day of spring in the northern hemisphere as the day to pause our regular work, and act for the survival of earth itself.
Participation grew and grew on that one day. The result was 20 million people poured into the streets across the US, including office workers and factory workers. 51 years later it is still the largest demonstration to ever occur on earth. I hope we have not become complacent. "The idea that one has a share in the planet and that one can and should help care for it may seem very large, and to some, quite beyond reality. But today, what happens on the other side of the world, even so far away, can effect what happens in your own home." says L. Ron Hubbard in The Way To Happiness.
