There was an unexpected freeze in the Central US in late winter. It dipped way down through the North American continent to the Gulf of Mexico. Usually the Gulf waters stay warm all through the winter. This year, 2021, saw the coldest , longest freeze on record. It shut down great swaths of the power grid in Texas, and challenged the grid in Oklahoma and a few other states. People helped each other and pulled through. Sea turtles also needed help from people. And the people helped. By 16 February 2,000 turtles had been rescued from the ultra cold waters.
On February 19, Sea Turtles, Inc. on South Padre Island, there were 2,500 turtles who were being kept warm enough to stay alive. One of them is judged to be 200 years old, and weighs 400 pounds. Turtles are reptiles, which means, in part, that their bodies are not heat generating in the same way as humans. Human bodies make their heat by burning fuel; turtles use heat from their surroundings, so when the water gets cold their bodies cannot stay alive. Volunteers took the turtles out of the sea and brought them to land where they could be kept warm enough.

By the 22 and 23 of February the turtles were released back into the Gulf of Mexico, and went back to living their turtle lives. Many different species share this planet.
