Competence is Prized in All Parts of Life and Living

Competence is a prized commodity. The most subtle area of competence seems to be spiritual.

Competence is a prized commodity. There are areas that we each have, where our abilities are easy to expand, where our interest is strong, and we want to create.
Then there are the areas that we find difficult. These can be physical challenges or mental, or even spiritual. In physical endeavors we seem to consider that limitations are very real, like needing to be tall to play basketball, but there is always some short guy who is fast, and a great ball handler, and can get around the tall guys and sink baskets. He is competent in a big way! He has gained skill, physically and mentally to the point of intuitive play. He fits well with his team and sport.
He is very competent.

The most subtle area of competence seems to be spiritual. It is difficult to "see". Attempting to measure it seems arrogant in the extreme. And yet among the human race we find those whose existence in their lives, as they live in the world, is largely spiritual. We have seen this in Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, and maybe our next door neighbors. There are people who grace the world around them. They offer kind words and encouragement, and an occasional cookie to the kids who walk by on their way to school. They make sure to acknowledge the mail carrier and the delivery people. It feels safer to be around them, like a kind of hug. This is a version of spiritual competence. "The way to happiness is best traveled with competent companions."
