If you are about to face a situation where you may need to operate a skid steer but are not sure whether a licence is needed or not, it is time to gather information. Without the relevant data, it is quite tough to handle your responsibilities properly. For instance, according to the present Australian Work Health and Safety Regulations, there are quite a few pieces of excavation equipment, where a licence isn’t required. That doesn’t give one the free pass for all the machines they may have to handle. This is why; the fact that you will need a skid steer licence should not be surprising.

The types of excavators do not require a licence
According to the present rules and regulations from relevant authorities, the following items that can be operated without a licence:

* Excavator (class LE)
* Front end loader / backhoe (class LB)
* Front end loader (class LL)
* Skid steer loader (class LS)
* Dozer (LZ)
* Grader (LG)
* Scraper (LP)

It is clear from this list above that there is a particular type of skid steer which does not require a licence for operating, but that doesn’t make the task easier.

Some additional legal details to handle
Without any experience or understanding of the pieces of machinery, it is tough to operate excavators. These machines are designed to complete complicated and heavy tasks. Yes, it is possible to get the jobs done with the push of a few buttons and levers, but knowing which ones to push and how will require a more profound knowledge on the subject. The DIY use of excavators within a private property is an exception for the licencing needs, but having a skid steer licence will help in this situation.

Knowing how to handle an excavator
If you have the licence, this means; you are aware of the piece of equipment, its usages and handling process. So when you are getting the work done, you can be trusted to know what you are doing. A point that you need to be aware of is, there are 29 separate high-risk excavator-related jobs which cannot be applied for without a special licence.

Some details for the DIY community
Under the present practice and legal details in the field, for the DIY community, a licence is not required, but you will have to give proof of adequate skills and experience in handling the piece of equipment. So if you have completed an order picker course or something similar, it will be for the best.

Once you complete the course and acquire the knowledge, it will remain with you always. Due to that, you will be able to handle the machine and anything related to it with minimal complications.
