A separate survey by Houzz, an online platform for home modeling and design, said that millennials and recent homebuyers account for most renovation activities in the country. Those planning to sell their homes also contribute to the numbers, and they mostly focus on exterior improvements to attract buyers.

According to the Houzz study, the average renovation expenditure was $59,800. Among the reasons to renovate, 17% of the respondents did it to address a recently discovered deterioration, while 4% did it to repair damage caused by a natural disaster in their area.

The Houzz survey also provided data on reasons for those who renovated their homes would go over their budget. Among those surveyed, 28% spent more than their initial budget because of unexpected construction-related issues.
