Gum Recession, Grafts and Periodontic Treatments

Our smile is made up of pink gums and white teeth. To protect our teeth, we must also take care of our gums.

What is Gum Recession?
Our teeth are safely housed in the jaw bone and surrounded by coral pink gums that form a collar around them. Your gums attach to the neck region of your teeth and remain so for many years. However, with age, your gums begin to move away from your teeth. This is call gum recession or gingival recession. Apart from age, other causes for receding gums include:

Poor oral hygiene
Aggressive brushing
Genes and heredity
Hormonal changes like puberty, pregnancy and menopause in women
Smoking and tobacco chewing habits
Grinding or clenching of teeth
Gum Recession

The most common symptoms of gum recession include:

Increased tooth sensitivity
Visibly shrinking gums
Teeth appearing longer than usual
Mobility in teeth
Teeth that change their alignment or position in the arch
Pus formation and gum bleeding
Exposed tooth roots
Gum recession treatment
Gum recession is treated based on the severity of the condition. Mild gum recession is usually treated by deep cleaning by your dentist. Antibiotics may be prescribed in some instances.

In cases where gum recession cannot be treated with just deep cleaning, minor surgery may be needed. If your periodontist or dentist suspects infection in your gums, they may prescribe antibiotics. Apart from antibiotics, other medications that may be needed to resolve the underlying cause of gum recession include:

Topical antibiotics gel
Antimicrobial mouthwash
Enzyme suppressants
Some commonly used procedures for treating gum recession include open flap deep cleaning, root planning, and grafts.

Thinking “Do gums grow back?” Well, though they cannot grow back by themselves, two types of grafts may be used to restore gum level in a patient:

Free gingival graft– This type of graft is used to partially cover the recession.
Connective tissue graft– In connective tissue grafts, the gingiva along with some connective tissue is grafted over the recessed gum. This type of graft is more predictable.
Treating Periodontal Diseases

Periodontal diseases can affect one or more parts of the periodontium– gums, supporting tissues, and bone. There are different types of periodontal treatments that are performed. While mild cases of periodontitis can be managed by deep cleaning and root planing, other conditions may require surgical intervention.

Surgical Periodontal Therapy
Surgical periodontal therapy includes dental procedures that prevent and correct gum and bone defects. There are three types of periodontal surgeries– gingival flap surgery, mucogingival flap surgery and osseous surgery.

Bone Grafts
Osseous (or bone) defects are usually corrected using bone grafts. Bone grafting procedures include regenerating bone using their own bone from another part of the body (called autograft), from another patient but from the same species (allograft) or using bone from another species (xenograft).

Synthetic bone grafting materials are also available today and are made up of hydroxyapatite along with tricalcium phosphate.

Lasers in Periodontics
While surgical treatments are the most popular treatment option for periodontal problems, the blade is slowly being replaced by lasers.

There are many advantages of using lasers in common periodontal procedures like flaps and grafting, such as:

Painless
Bloodless field
Faster healing after treatment completion
Higher patient acceptance rate
The most common type of laser used in periodontology is the soft tissue diode.

Some treatments where lasers are being routinely used in periodontics include:

Depigmentation
Crown lengthening procedure
Frenectomy
Operculectomy
Stage 2 of implant placement
Removal of benign oral lesions
Periodontal diseases are commonly occurring but most people are unaware of them. If you notice any signs or symptoms in your gums like bleeding, inflammation, pus discharge, mobile teeth, or gingival recession, visit your dentist immediately. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment help in saving your teeth and gums. With the latest advances in periodontal treatment like graft materials and lasers, managing conditions like gum recession and bone defects are relatively easy and with a higher success rate.
