January Human Trafficking Month and Guatemala

The United States declared January the month for raising awareness of Human Trafficking and how to prevent it. It is important to know the Guatemalan connection.

Guatemalans, after 36 years of civil war, fighting the caste system and poverty and working to establish civil rights, found they needed to eliminate inequality and discrimination among other human rights violations. It was found that 57% of Human Trafficking was in the child sex trade. It difficult to absorb, but children were regularly sold to adults for sexual use.

To combat this, more than 2,900 soldiers and more than 4,000 police officers were trained in Human Rights and they took to the streets of Guatemala to educate the common citizen in their basic rights.
+ Exercising Human Right No. 29 “Responsibility; We have duty to other people, and we should protect their rights and freedoms”.

Youth for Human Rights Foundation Guatemala, under the direction of Cynthia Guerra managed to reach all these people and many schools in the country so thousands of Guatemalans now know their Rights. All countries should follow this example with the hope of a better world.
