Is LASIK Safe? Top LASIK Experts Respond To Concerns And Criticism Of LASIK Surgery

Although LASIK surgery has been an option for vision correction for many years now, there are still concerns and criticism concerning its safety.

Moretsky Cassidy Vision Correction center, a top provider of eye care and treatment, has been involved in research studies that have proven the satisfaction of the LASIK procedure as reported by their patients. Since the procedure was first conducted about 20 years ago, there have been thousands of clinical studies that have proved its safety.

A major concern for many potential LASIK patients is the possibility of complications or failure of the surgery. Like all surgeries, there is a subtle risk with this surgery. However, these are not as glaring as some reports available online.

Doctors at Arizona Lasik have advised potential patients of the surgery to get information about the procedure from the right sources. They say the most common side effect in their many years of experience are night vision symptoms such as dry eye, starbursts, ghosting, halos and glare.

According to the doctors, the possibility of side effects is during the healing process and not when the procedure is being performed. “There are very rare complications from laser vision correction surgery we have experienced in this clinic. In one or two cases we have had patients experiencing infections or flapdislocatios, but the number of these cases is not worrying” says Dr. Cassidy.

Responsible medical practice has been eroded by individuals who feel the internet with erroneous information. Claims like “there is a 50% chance of a LASIK patient experiencing adverse side effects” have no basis as there is no scientific evidence to support them.

The Lasik Arizona center doctors say that in addition to the FDA clinical studies that enabled the approval of LASIK for correction of farsightedness with astigmatism and nearsightedness, there have also been new technologies that have greatly improved the success of vision correction surgery.

Are LASIK Patients Satisfied With The Results?

Dr. Moretsky says when the question should people not agree to LASIK surgery arises, the first answer should be in a question form, "Are LASIK patients satisfied with the results?" A report of over 1,581 articles from 20 plus countries that was submitted by Dr. Solomon and his colleagues showed that 85.4% of LASIK patients were “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with the results. The final draft of the articles was published in the journal of American Academy of Ophthalmology (Sandoval HP, Fernandez de Castro LE, Solomon KD, et al.)

To determine the success rate of laser vision correction surgeries, the expert doctors cited above advice you refer to the most recent studies and not outdated ones.

“We cannot claim there are no risks of a patient experiencing side effects. However, side effects like starbursts, glares or halos that people who wear eyeglasses experience can be greatly reduced by a laser vision correction surgery like wavefront-based Lasik,” says Dr. Cassidy.
