Geoinformatics is the branch of science & technology which deals with the study of information science in order to approach the problems related to geography, cartography and Geo-sciences. Essentially it is the practice of data accumulation, analysis, processing and storage of spatial information & development of relevant infrastructure. The field covers an extremely broad spectrum which spans across other sectors like zoology, botany & environmental studies. Not only that but fisheries, forest mapping, Ornithology, agricultural encroachment, so forth and so on are also the domains associated with Geoinformatics. So it is apparent that the field has a vast number of career opportunities & growth prospects. The technology encircling the field is advancing day-by-day, which makes it necessary for the people who practice this science to be up-to-date & proficient in the field. In this article, we will discuss the two programs which train the aspiring Geoinformatics personnel to a masters level.

M.Tech in Geoinformatics:

This course is a masters level program for the students who see themselves as future GIS consultants, GIS managers, GIS Engineers, GIS analysts, GIS developers, etc. This program covers a variety of aspects related to the advanced knowledge of the field in detail. The structure of the program is designed in a way to educate the students right from the basics of the remote sensing & navigation technology to digital image processing. The students who enroll for this course also learn to do image interpretation & analysis of Geospatial data. An M. Tech in Geoinformatics student can work in operational, technical or executive capacity and contribute in enriching the field.

MSC in Geoinformatics:

This course is a masters level program for the students who belong from academic backgrounds like Engineering, Science, geography, geology, agriculture, environment, forestry Engineering, IT, C.S., etc. As evident from the host of field this program attracts, the career possibilities as well are endless. This program covers a variety of aspects related to the detailed knowledge of the field. The structure of the program is designed to educate the students about the basic concepts of Geography, remote sensing, geographic information system, GIS & GPS, etc.The students who enroll for this course get a practical knowledge of photo & image interpretation, statistical methods, spatials analysis, advanced remote sensing & GIS. An M.Sc. in Geoinformatics student can get lucrative job opportunities with Central & State governments. Under the department of Space several programs like NRSA Hyderabad, NESAC Shillong, RRSAC Kharagpur, Jodhpur, Nagpur, Bangalore, etc. are looking for students equipped with this degree.

Considering how much job opportunities are there in the field of Geoinformatics and what kind of knowledge one needs to possess to make a career in this sector, its very valuable that the students opt for absolutely premier colleges. Symbiosis Institute of Geoinformatics (SIG) is a well-established institute which inculcates quality knowledge within students.
