2021 HOME DECOR TRENDS
With the ongoing pandemic, more and more people are having to work from home this year, and also spending more time at home than we previously did. If you’re at home for longer periods, it’s more important than ever to be happy with your surroundings, and decorate your home accordingly. Our own four walls need to provide calmness and comfort, as well as security.
Now, there’s no right or wrong way to decorate your home, and no need to follow the latest trends unless you really want to. The most important thing is to be happy with your living space and how it’s decorated. You don’t necessarily even have to redecorate, just adding a few new accessories here and there can make a huge difference.
Bohemian, or Boho style shows no signs of going away, and if anything is even stronger this year. Think rattan & wicker furniture, earthy colours, soft throws, rugs, and macrame accessories. It lends itself beautifully to both living room and bedrooms.

Probably in part thanks to Ikea, the Scandi style design of simple lines and minimalism is here to stay for the foreseeable. With a mainly white colour scheme, light natural woods and the odd hint of light neutral colours thrown in, it’s a relatively easy look to pull off, but maybe notone I’d recommend if you have young children!

Ask any tween or teen about room decor and you’ll probably hear the word “aesthetic.” Aesthetic is defined as “being concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty.” In home decor terms it means beautiful things that don’t necessarily have a particular purpose, and are there just to look nice. Whether it’s vines hanging from a wall, or fairy lights draped around a mirror, there are many ways to add that aesthetic vibe to a room. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

The botanical trend is definitely here to stay. Joining palms and monstera plants, the latest craze is dried flowers and foliage, such as pampas grass, very much brought on by the boho trend. Real plants can help the air condition in a room as well as making it look nice. If you’re no good at keeping plants alive, there are plenty of realistic fake plants available these days. Alternatively, bring a bit of greenery into the room with bold statement wallpapers, or wall art.

COLOURS
There seems to have been a shift away from the monochrome colour palettes we’ve seen in the last few years, and while grey is still a popular colour, it’s more likely to be seen teamed with other brighter or earthy shades, and even blended with other colours such as beige, to give us “greige.”
Sherwin Williams’ announced their 40 trend colours for 2021, split into four different palettes.

Sanctuary focuses on a natural colour palette, that also lends itself well to Scandi-style, which is ever popular.

Encounter’s colours are rooted in culture and artisan craft. The hues in this palette are rich, but slightly muted, and would work particularly well with a boho or tribal theme.

Continuum features colours inspired by mid-century modern designs, with a palette of white, charcoal and fantastic bright pops of colour that would bring a ray of sunshine to any home.

Tapestry is “today’s more curated take on maximalism,” with a vibrant palette including lavish pinks and greens.

Here in the UK, Dulux’s colour of the year 2021 is Brave Ground. This warm, earthy shade would work well in any room, and can be teamed with brights such as berry or coral shades, or other natural shades, giving you many options.

Rather than opting for their usual single colour of the year, this year Pantone have gone for two colours – Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. “A message of happiness supported by fortitude, the combination of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit.”

WALLPAPER
Wallpaper remains popular, whether it’s a feature wall with vibrant textures, or a more muted style for the whole room. Bold floral patterns, natural textures and mural-style wallpapers are where it’s currently happening.
