The visible world of animals, plants and fungi, as well as the invisible world of bacteria and viruses, are living things. We can say that life is ordered at a basic level.

What does biology mean? Simply put, in all its grandeur, it is the study of life. Biology is about all forms of life, from the very small algae to the very big elephant. But how do we know if there's something going on? Is a virus alive or dead, for instance? Biologists have created a set of criteria to answer these questions called "life characteristics."

The visible world of animals, plants and fungi, as well as the invisible world of bacteria and viruses, are living things. We can say that life is ordered at a basic level. Organisms have an organization that is extremely complex. The intricate systems of the basic unit of life, the cell, are familiar to us all.
While modern biology is a relatively recent development, since ancient times it has been studying sciences related to and included within it. Natural philosophy has been studied as early as Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indian subcontinent, and China's ancient civilizations. The origins of modern biology and its approach to nature study, however, are most commonly traced back to ancient Greece.
Advances in microscopy also affected biological thinking deeply. A number of biologists pointed to the cell's central importance in the early 19th century, and in 1838 Schleiden and Schwann began to promote the cell theory's now universal ideas. Jean-Baptista Lamarck was the first to present a cohesive evolutionary theory, although the theory of natural selection was propagated throughout the scientific community by the British naturalist Charles Darwin. The discovery of DNA's double-helical structure in 1953 marked the transition to the age of molecular genetics.

The biology field is very wide-ranging and can be divided into several disciplines. These disciplines are categorized in the most general sense based on the type of organism being studied. Zoology, for example, deals with animal studies, botany deals with plant studies, and the study of microorganisms is microbiology. These fields of study can be further broken down into a number of specialized subdisciplines. Anatomy, cell biology, genetics, and physiology are some of them.
