As you get older, there are more and more health and dental issues that need to be addressed. Bodies break down with age, and just like old machines, people too need some maintenance. Specifically, when dealing with teeth, there are so many issues that can arise the older you get such as gum disease, cavities, periodontitis, gingivitis tooth erosion, and the list goes on and on.

Dental implants help prevent these conditions and strengthen the basic foundations of your teeth. A dental implant is essentially an artificial root device, which typically consists of titanium or a titanium alloy. This is used in dentistry to support the restoration of a tooth or group of teeth. When a dental implant procedure is performed, replacement replica teeth are established on top of the implant to replace missing teeth. Nearly all dental implants placed today are root-form implants, meaning they appear similar in size, shape and function to an actual tooth root. They are are placed within the bone, and the bone of the jaw accepts and osseointegrates with the titanium post. Osseointegration refers to the fusion of the implant surface with the surrounding bone.

Dental implants will eventually fuse with bone, but since there is no periodontal ligament replaced, they will feel slightly different from natural teeth during the consumption of food. Typically, after a procedure like this is done, it can take anywhere between two and six months to be fully recovered. Once the patient has recovered, the next step would be installing the tooth replicas on top of the implant to replace the missing teeth.

Despite the length of time it takes to implement and recover from, implantes dentales is a scientifically sound way to replace missing or broken teeth, which will improve a patient's overall smile and way of life.
