Where has this year gone? It’s already November, and 2013 is approaching fast! So let me ask you a question- did you achieve everything you wanted to in 2012? Most people’s ambitions for the year will have dwindled and died in early January, so if you answered “NO” to that question then you’re certainly not alone!

Despite having the best of intentions, what tends to happen is that enthusiasm dwindles and our old routine takes over. Before you know it, it’s November and you’re still no closed to achieving your goals. But I’m sure there are plenty of things that you still want to achieve. For example, you may want to earn some extra income, lose some weight, take up a new hobby, spend more time with the family, get out of debt, quit smoking, or do some charity work.

If you have the desire to achieve similar goals to this then you must read on because I’m going to show you how you can make 2013 the BEST year of your life by achieving these goals.

The first step to a successful year in 2013 is to write down everything you want to achieve. Sadly, it’s not enough to simply think about this, you MUST write it down using a good old fashioned pen and paper! Be specific about what you want to achieve. If you want a promotion at work then write down the EXACT job you want. If you want a pay rise, how MUCH do you want to achieve (be ambitious but not unrealistic!)? If you want to lose some weight then be specific about your target weight and so on. It doesn’t really matter how many things you have on your list. A year is plenty of time to achieve 5 or even 10 goals as long as you are committed to each one. Alternatively, you may only have one thing on your list, which is also great because you can focus all your attention on that one important thing.

Once you have your WRITTEN list of goals you need to consider why you haven’t achieved these things already. It’s very possible that something is holding you back, and often this is a psychological barrier. If there’s something in your life that’s preventing you from achieving your goals then you need to confront this and remove that factor from your life. No problem is insurmountable. Indeed, people have gone on to achieve incredible things despite having to overcome some significant barriers. To see the proof of what can be achieved, then take a look at these inspirational success stories . If the issue is something quite serious and you really can’t confront it on your own, consider confiding in a close friend or family member and ask them to help you through it.

Quite simply, you will never achieve your goals until you can overcome whatever it is that’s been holding you back.

After you’ve pushed past this and are ready to achieve you goal, you should feel very proud of yourself. Overcoming barriers like this is a difficult thing to do. So, using this new found courage and enthusiasm, it’s time to achieve those goals! Take each goal one at a time and write out a step by step plan on how you intend to achieve that goal. Sometimes, working backwards from the final result is easier than working forwards from where you are now. Once you’ve done this, you know exactly HOW you are going to achieve your goals and you can simply go through the motions one step at a time. After achieving each step on the way to your goal, reward yourself and enjoy the feeling of success. With each step you take you are getting closer to the final goal, so enjoy the JOURNEY as much as you will enjoy the final result.

To prevent yourself getting distracted from your goals, or losing interest, it’s also a good idea to make a visual representation of the end result. Create a poster with pictures that directly relate to your goals. For example, if you want to save up for a new car, you can add a picture of the EXACT car you want to your poster. If your goal is to train for a marathon, show pictures of happy people completing the marathon you want to run and so on. This visualization of your goals is incredibly powerful and will make you MUCH more likely to achieve your goals. Make sure you pin your poster somewhere you’ll see it each day, and take time to enjoy looking at the pictures whenever possible.

Finally, look at your list of goals again and think about whether there might be something you can start TODAY. In doing so, you get ahead of the game, and you may even achieve your goals THIS YEAR rather than next. That would be a huge achievement and I’m sure would make your New Year celebrations even more enjoyable!
