Wood makes an attractive and environmentally friendly material for kids swing sets.

Wood makes an attractive and environmentally friendly material for kids swing sets. However, unless a wooden play set is properly cared for and maintained, it will soon become damaged and need replacing. Here are some tips on how to care for wooden swing sets .

Check the Set Every Week

Take a few minutes at least once a week to check the swing over for cracks, breaks, rot or loose screws. Also check for splinters and rough edges. Tug on the swings to make sure the chains still work. Check the chains for rust or breakage. A good time to check a swing set is when you are performing other yard maintenance tasks like mowing the lawn or raking leaves.

Checking for Wood-Boring Insects

During warmer weather, check for signs of wood-boring insects while checking out the wooden parts of the play set. These include tiny piles of sawdust-like material on the ground next to the set and tiny entry holes.

Spring Cleaning

Use a power washer to thoroughly clean a wooden play set every spring or when the weather finally turns warmer for outside activities. A power washer is the best way to remove any bird droppings, chewing gum or other germ-infested substance. Although most wooden play sets are made with sealed wood, consider applying a new coast of weather seal on the wooden parts of the set.

Rake Landing Areas

The ground right under the kids swing sets and where kids land when they jump off of them wears down quickly and becomes a trap for anything that falls out of kids’ pockets. Over time, these areas may dip down to catch any trash that may blow around the yard. Once a week, rake these areas to remove trash. If the play set also includes a sandbox, rake this, too. Every year, add some loose material to fill up any grooves caused by little feet.
