When a person finishes their studies at college often they want to travel around a bit an see the world and learn what it is like to live in places different than the ones that they have previously been exposed to. One way to do this is to get a job teaching English in a foreign land. France is a location where these skills might be desirable, but just speaking the language is not enough of a requirement to be able to teach English in a French School. It is possible to be fluent in a language and not be skilled enough as a communicator to teach it. Here are some tips for teaching English in France.

If you teach English in Francethat is called becoming an ESL (English as a Second Language) person. Since France is a part of the European Economic Union there are several difficult and complicated rules that potential teachers have to overcome to be eligible for a work visa. Many times the schools will simply hire a qualified candidate illegally so that the most qualified person will be teaching the classes. It seems that the school has to prove that there are no qualified candidates in the European Union. Often applicants from Ireland or the United Kingdom will get preferential treatment when applying for positions simply because hiring them legally is easier. Don’t get frustrated with the politics, if there is a true desire to teach English to French people then a way will present itself.

The best season to find a job teaching English in France is going to be around the end of August or the start of September. This is because the French school year is very similar to the American so they do get their summers off. Sometimes there are jobs open and available in January as well so one does not have to wait an entire year to find a job. Many jobs will open up in the mid year as teachers often leave during the winter break because they are homesick or are unhappy with teaching. These are the best times to look for ESL positions in France. There are not a lot of summer school positions in France as most of the children in the country are dedicated to sports or other activities.

One of the most flattering options for teaching ESL is going to be in a private language school. These facilities come in a wide range of options. The age of the students being taught and the ability of each of them are going to be different. Some will be simple students of school age that need tutoring with their English which many companies are going to provide English classes to members of their management team so that they can function better in the business world. They are interested in fine tuning their conversational skills. There is a significant investment by the business sector in the first place. Teaching in a public school is also a great option but the clientele will only be school age children and the pay is generally lower.
