In celebration of the 10th Anniversary season, Boulder's Seicento Baroque Ensemble will perform three concerts featuring the rarely performed original version of Bach's beloved Magnificat- April 22-24 in Boulder, Longmont, and Arvada, Colorado.

The program will showcase J.S. Bach’s glorious Magnificat in Eb (the rarely performed original version of his beloved Magnificat in D) in a celebratory concert of Magnificat settings from the Baroque era. A delightful setting once attributed to Buxtehude will open, followed by an elegant setting by Charpentier.
This spring concert will be special for Seicento in a couple of ways: the full Seicento choir will be singing together, post-pandemic, for the first time since 2019, and founding director Evanne Browne will join the soprano section of the choir after a four year hiatus. Artistic Director, Amanda Balestrieri explains: “I planned the 10th Anniversary Season concert to honor the 'old guard' and introduce the 'new guard.' My Assistant Conductor and Accompanist, Wesley Leffingwell, is making a name for himself in the local early music community as a historic keyboard specialist, and our alto and soprano soloists, Ingrid Johnson and Emma Vawter, are relative newcomers to the local scene. By contrast, bass Adam Ewing and tenor Daniel Hutchings are already established as soloists in the area, and I am also honored to have the founding director of Seicento, Evanne Browne, present in the choir for this concert. There is a lot of history and a lot of promise for Seicento's future there!”
Magnificent Magnificats will feature the chamber choir, with vocal soloists, and an orchestra featuring baroque trumpets, oboes, recorders, and drums, in addition to the strings—a larger gathering of instruments than Seicento has used in a while. The first version of Bach's Magnificat is special in that it has a slightly different orchestration, some different musical lines and harmonies, and four additional movements that are rarely performed.

Tickets are $25 for General Admission and $10 for Students. For more information and ticket links please visit seicentobaroque.org.

About

Founded in 2011, Seicento Baroque Ensemble is a Boulder-based, semi-professional, auditioned chamber choir noted for its performances of lesser-known music of the 17th and 18th centuries using historically informed performance practices and period instruments. With its primary emphasis on music of the early Baroque period, the ensemble occupies a unique niche in the Colorado choral music scene. Seicento is an Ensemble in Residence at First United Methodist Church of Boulder, under their “Arts for the Soul” program.
