Marine batteries have been designed mainly for use on a boat, with thicker plates and solid structure designed to withstand the hammering and vibration that can happen onboard any powerboat. Because of this, marine batteries are often pricier than auto batteries, which may lure a few boat owners into buying an automobile battery as a substitute for a marine battery.
A marine battery will last longer and be much more dependable than an automobile battery in a boat.
Batteries on boats manage two primary types of tasks: beginning a motor and running electric heaps like lights, accessories, and electronics for longer time intervals. First, select a battery to decide the battery's program and choose from among the four battery chemistries: flooded, gel, AGM, or Lithium.
Starting batteries, which crank the starter of your boat's motor, would be the sprinters of your electric system. They provide between 75 and 400 amperes for 5-15 seconds, then are recharged in short order by your engine's alternator. Like most of the lead-acid batteries, they're built with alternating levels of positive and negative plates with insulation between them.
Starting batteries have thinner and more numerous plates, supplying additional surface area to create large amperage bursts of the current. Both disadvantages of the structure are the plates are rather delicate in high-impact surroundings and that beginning batteries don't tolerate deep sparks that reduce their working lifespan.
Types of Marine Batteries
Marine Starting Batteries give fast but effective spurts of energy within short intervals and are made to start the engine and be immediately recharged from the engine alternator. A starting battery shouldn't be used for trolling motors or powering appliances.
Marine Deep Cycle Batteries are intended to release slowly over an extended time and defy a few hundred charging and discharging cycles. A deep cycle battery is the best selection for powering an electric trolling motor and other corded accessories like sound systems, a windlass, depth finders, fish locators, and appliances. Deep cycle batteries shouldn't be substituted for beginning batteries.
Marine Dual-Purpose Batteries unite starting and deep cycle battery and therefore are a great alternative on smaller if there is no space for two batteries. While they can execute a beginning battery and deep cycle battery, they are less efficient as different batteries.
