The 13th edition of Indian Premier League 2020 is likely to be called off due to the current situation surrounding COVID-19 in India

The 13th edition of Indian Premier League 2020 is likely to be called off due to the current situation surrounding COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) in India, as per the report in the Indian Express. The mega auction, which was scheduled to take place before IPL 2021, will also be postponed by a year and all the franchises will retain the same teams they have for this year’s IPL and they will be given an option to pick or drop players as well.

"We will inform the franchises once we get final confirmation from the Indian government, the same season can continue next season,” Indian Express quoted a source in the IPL administration as saying.

This year’s IPL was actually scheduled to begin on March 29, but later it was pushed back to April 15. However, with India reporting more than a 1000 positive cases due to the novel coronavirus, that seems the 13th edition of IPL wouldn’t take place or it is highly unlikely to be played here. Moreover, from Tuesday, the 21-day lockdown is going on nation-wide which is scheduled to run till mid-April as well.

However, the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had earlier said that a shortened version of the tournament could be played while assuring that the safety of the players was important. The board had also donated Rs. 51 crore for the coronavirus relief fund of Prime Minister in the country as well.

Notably, the BCCI had earlier met the IPL franchises on March 14 to discuss the situation where it was decided that the tournament was pushed back till April 15. However, the board is yet to officially update on the current situation. The report said that the BCCI are waiting for an announcement about visas from the Indian government and sports ministry before officially making a decision on the IPL.
