Rice mill generates wastes mainly in the solid, liquid and gaseous forms. Paddy husker and ash constitute the main bulk of solid wastes. However husk is reused in the mill for boiling water. So residues left after combustion is ash. Gaseous emission is mainly CO, SO2 and NOx. Besides these, rice mill generate liquid wastes from the following operations: parboiling wastewater, paddy soaked wastewater and boiler blow down. The liquid wastes from these operations ultimately passes through a common drain to the outside of the mill boundaries and this is commonly called as combined effluent or combined wastewater or loosely as effluent or waste water.

For both huskers, variation of husked ratio with specific husking energy was well expressed by the Weibull's distribution function. Husking energy efficiency, system cracked ratio and system broken ratio curves were well expressed by the empirical equations. The three performance parameters were used to optimize the husking performance of the two huskers for the three varieties of rice. Rubber roll husker had high husking energy efficiency compared to impeller husker for randomly husked short grain rice and for all the three varieties of rice husked as single grain. Optimal husked ratio in terms of husking energy efficiency was also found to be optimal in terms of system cracked ratio and system broken ratio for all the three varieties of rice.

With the installation of modern paddy separator it may be possible to increase the overall milling system efficiency and to reduce the grain loss. We are intended to identify and define important parameters required for assessing the separation performance of a tray-type paddy separator and to determine the optimum conditions of the inclination of separator-table. (1) Separation performance can be given by use of many parameters found from the measurement of separator outputs. In addition, their modes of variation due to a varied inclination of the separation table did not indicated in the same direction . However, the efficiency of separator had an advantage to indicate the overall characteristics of the separator performance with a clear optimum inclination condition of the separator table. (2) The optimum feed rate and maximum efficiency of the separator did not occur at the identical inclination of the separator table. Thus, for its practical operation it is necessary to compromise between the qualitative and quantitative performances of the separator.
