Joining a graduate marine engineering course is one of the best career options for those candidates who are looking to build a career in a profession which will give them exposure in a wide variety of domains. This is because a career in marine engineering opens up the possibility to explore a number of facets of this domain which is not possible in other professions.

Merchant navy is a common name for the shipping industry which transport a variety of cargo such as food, oil products, and minerals from one country to the other using a dedicated sea corridor. The route which will be used will depend entirely on the type of products being transported and the size of the vessel.

That said, it is interesting to note that every year thousands of candidates take admissions in various maritime universities all across the globe. So, what is it that prompts them to take up this course? According to a lecturer at the International Maritime Institute (IMI), “Taking up a graduate marine engineering course opens up doors for a life of comfort and opportunities in the future. Not only are you paid well but, you also get access to better lifestyle and the opportunity to travel across various countries of the world”.

Despite all these benefits, the biggest drawback for these candidates happens to be the pay package. Pay scales are rather high and is maintained by independent organizations such as IMO (International Maritime Organization) and ILO (International Labour Organization). However, across the same position, the salaries vary depending on the hiring company and qualifications.

Other big benefits as mentioned by the lecturer at IMI happen to be “tax benefits and the opportunity to explore the world. Candidates in the merchant navy are subject to the same taxes as other citizens as they are in the sea for almost half a year. They have different tax rates and slabs. Additionally, being at sea also means that they get the opportunity to explore various countries of the world during the course of their service wherever their job takes them. As a result, many merchant navy employees take their families along with them, however this is a benefit which available only in certain companies and reserved for candidates of a certain seniority.”
