The Indian Maritime Institute or IMI, Noida today discussed the various things one should consider before young adults choose Merchant Navy as a career and join a suitable course. Though the career has all the elements of glamour and adventure, it has become a popular choice with several institutes in the country now offering world-class training to the interested candidates. However, not every individual is fit to be a part of this adventurous, rewarding but challenging career.

According to a senior educator at IMI, “Right from educational qualification, selecting the right job, fitness, to personality and attitude, a candidate should consider many different factors before taking up a career in merchant navy. As compared to almost every other career, a career at sea is surely very challenging but highly rewarding for the right individuals. Apart from the life at sea, even the training and studies to move ahead in your career can be very challenging.”

The institute also suggests that a career in merchant navy is not for someone who loves to have an active social life or finds it difficult to adjust when around unknown faces. With days and months spent at sea along with people from all the different parts of the world, this career could surely prove very difficult for someone without the right set of qualities and skills.

The educator continues, “When someone starts a career in merchant navy, they are generally required to spend several months onboard away from their home and probably from their country too. People from different countries and ethnic backgrounds work together on a vessel, and this too can be challenging for a lot of people. As one of the leading merchant navy institutes in India, we have teamed up with Fleet Management recently to offer sponsorship to our DNS students.”

IMI offers a number of merchant navy courses to aspirants who believe that they have what it takes to become successful in this field. But there is something to be said for students looking to shape their future, choose a career that suits your temperament and life’s goals. Though you may change over time, as IMI rightly points out, it does not bode well for a candidate to join a course and then realise it is not their time or effort.

About IMI

IMI was established in the year 1991 and is a combined effort of 12 professionals from the maritime industry. Situated in Great Noida, the institute is affiliated to the Directorate General of Shipping and is also ISO 9001:2008 certified. The institute offers a number of merchant navy courses for which it has also received ‘A1’ grade from the esteemed RINA foundation.
