Cell lysis is a process in which a cell membrane is ruptured due to some external forces or conditions such as viral infection or osmosis

Cells contain biomolecules such as proteins or nucleic acids present in the cytoplasm and enclosed within a membrane. Cell lysis is a process in which a cell membrane is ruptured due to some external forces or conditions such as viral infection or osmosis, resulting in the release of cell contents, thus in subsequent death of the cell. In industries and research laboratories, cell lysis is often used to break open the cell to study its internal components. The two methods through which cell lysis can be achieved include mechanical and chemical methods. Mechanical cell lysis method includes high shear mixing, sonication, freeze or thaw cycles, traditional homogenization, grinding, and high pressure homogenization whereas, chemical lysis method comprises osmotic lysis, and the use of detergents, chelating agents.

Market Dynamics

The global cell lysis market is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period, owing to increasing prevalence of chronic diseases and increasing development in cell lysis by key market players. For instance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2015 data findings, 5,251 deaths were reported due to influenza infection in 2015, in the U.S. Furthermore, according to a National Cancer Institute, 2016, an estimated 16.8 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the U.S., with around 595,690 deaths from the disease. The number of people with cancer is expected to rise to 19 million by 2024. Such increasing prevalence of cancer and infectious disease are expected to drive growth of the cell lysis market. Moreover, increasing research and development expenditure by biopharmaceutical industries and biotechnology industries fosters growth of the cell lysis market. According to 2012 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector represented 17.7% of business R&D expenditure globally. However, high cost of cell based research, owing to high expenditure in research and development for CAR-T cell therapy hampers growth of the cell lysis market.
