Sigma Delta Pi is proud to induct Spanish Literature student Urmy Shukla into the National Spanish Honor Society because of her academic success.

Brown University’s Sigma Delta Pi is proud to induct Spanish Literature and Economics student Urmy Shukla into the National Spanish Honor Society. She has proven herself to be an extremely intellectual student and has earned this honor in her time here at Brown University. Urmy Shukla’s many accomplishments made her an ideal candidate for the National Spanish Honor Society.

Sigma Delta Pi was originally established at the University of California at Berkeley in 1919. While this National Collegiate Spanish Honor Society does house many Hispanic students, it is largely made up on non-Hispanic students majoring in Spanish language and literature, like Urmy Shukla, who is not of Hispanic descent, but of Indian descent.

Urmy Shukla is graduating Magna Cum Laude from Brown University and plans to obtain her MS from the London School of Economics and Political Science. After that, she will earn a PhD in Sociology, Political Economy and Development, and Human Rights from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. These goals are not unexpected from Urmy Shukla as she has established herself as a student and will no doubt be successful in her future endeavors.

Sigma Delta Pi was pleased with Urmy Shukla’s grade point average, extracurricular activities, and her genuine love of Spanish culture and literature. Because tis major is not the most popular in the United States, let alone at Brown University, it was an unexpected honor to have a student as well-rounded and accomplished as Urmy Shukla take up this degree. Urmy Shukla is the type of student any organization or society would be thrilled to count as a member.

“I have always been interested in other cultures and their development, especially Spanish culture,” states Urmy Shukla, who insists that the honor is purely hers. “It seemed obvious that I would study this subject at Brown University. I am thrilled to become one of the honored Sigma Delta Pi’s members.”

Not only did Urmy Shukla participate in Sigma Delta Pi, but she was also involved with Olneyville ESOL program as a coordinator while at Brown University. Both experiences increased her love of Spanish and helped her create lasting friendships.
