Joshua M. Shields numerous documented studies into the invasive species Amur honeysuckle into the mixed hardwood forests of Indiana.

A subject of numerous studies, papers, presentations and investigations from 2011 through 2014, Joshua M. Shields’ research into the invasion of the non-native Amur honeysuckle into the mixed hardwood forests of Indiana has been extensive. Shields contributed to research work in 2011, “Diversity and composition of ground-layer vegetation in Indiana mixed-hardwood forests invaded by the non-native Amur honeysuckle,” and presented at the 9th Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas. A poster presentation, “Short-term effects of removing the non-native, invasive Amur honeysuckle on spring flowering forest forbs in Indiana,” for the Purdue University Department of Forestry and Natural Resources Research Symposium, and oral presentation, “Spatial characteristics of an Amur honeysuckle invasion in an Indiana mixed-hardwoods forest,” at the 97th Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon in 2012, are part of Shields’ collaborative work.

Joshua M. Shields mentored an article for the Compass magazine of the Purdue University Department of Forestry and Natural Resources entitled, “Ecological impacts and spatial dynamics of Amur honeysuckle in Indiana forests” in spring 2013, and was invited to present research in 2013 as an oral presentation, “Age distribution and spatial patterning of an invasive shrub in secondary hardwood forests,” and a documented research poster presentation, “Abundance and space use of white-footed mouse in Indiana mixed-hardwood forests invaded by Amur honeysuckle,” at the North American Forest Ecology Workshop in Bloomington, Indiana.

In 2014, Joshua M. Shields’ presented peer-reviewed publications of his research into the effects of Amur honeysuckle on white-footed mice and the mixed hardwood forests of Indiana. His collaborative research work appeared in Review at Invasive Plant Science and Management, the Journal of Wildlife Management 78, and Forest Science 60.
