For many years, the United Nations has struggled to put international law into a codified and standardized structure. Kamil Idris of Sudan asserts that this is a difficult proposition because of the continued need for state sovereignty and the lack of supranational organizations to oversee the international community. To address this issue, the United Nations created the International Law Commission in the early 20th century. The International Law Commission is charged with promoting the codification and standardization of international law while solving disputes in international law.

Kamil Idris of Sudan has been elected by the United Nations General Assembly as a member of this body, and he hopes to leverage his considerable knowledge regarding international law to help set policy for the international community. As one of 34 members in the International Law Commission, Kamil Idris of Sudan is able to help governments and international organizations create international norms on various issues. By doing this, Kamil Idris of Sudan is slowly helping to solidify rules and standards in the international community.

When asked, Kamil Idris of Sudan was well aware of the magnitude of his responsibilities: “It is a heavy burden to be sure,” Kamil Idris of Sudan explained, “But I am honored to be the one to bear it. It is my hope that through the ILC, the international community can continue to move closer to common standards of international law.” Kamil Idris of Sudan hopes that by improving the perception of international law, he can help bring nations to a more cooperative place.

Kamil Idris of Sudan works as an independent individual within this organization, helping to create policy rather than representing Sudanese interests. Members of the Council are required to be persons of recognized competence in international law. Kamil Idris of Sudan fits this description perfectly.
