Jane Turbes - Understanding Work-Life Balance

Finding work-life balance is hard for many employees. For Jane Turbes, understanding this balance is the first step to achieving it.

When she was a young girl, Jane Turbes was unfortunate to lose both her parents. As the youngest of eight children, it would seem the road ahead would be a tough one. At such an early point in her life, Jane Turbes knew she would have to work extra hard to get through college and life. When she got the opportunity, she started working at Farm Credit Services in St. Cloud, MN and Shelard National Park in St. Louis Park, MN.

Working 70-hour weeks in something Jane Turbes is accustomed to. Ever since she can remember, she’s worked extra hours to improve on her skills and knowledge in finance. However, with all the late nights, she has always appreciated the value of having the right balance between work and life. While this is something many employees find elusive in the current business world, Jane assures that it is achievable with the right understanding.

For starters, work life balance is not something that can be provided as part of a benefits package. It is true that some employers offer schedules that are more flexible and extra benefits than others, but these can only help you manage your life efficiently. To achieve a good balance, you must give your life a direction.

In the current world, employees have been driven further away from achieving a good balance by messages such as “it’s a tough economy to survive in,” or “7% employment,” and so on. Many people are forced to value the jobs they possess even though they might be stressed out and fatigued, observes Jane Turbes. Each day is more of a race to “meet expectations” and complete a list of tasks. Simply put, that is living in survival mode, says Jane, and not seeking balance.

Finding balance in life requires moving towards goals and improvement. Having goals to aspire to create the excitement that keep us moving, Jane Turbes continues. When you work towards a goal and the hard work you put in produces real results that improve your life, then you are moving in the right direction. Balance then is not about spending equal time between work and life, but rather pursuing goals that improve your life while still being satisfied with where you are.
