Farrukh Chaudhry is a neurologist who is devoted to conducting thorough research in his field. Alongside Jose Biller, MD, and Murray Flaster, MD, PhD, Farrukh Chaudhry researched that, although transient ischemic attack, or mini stroke, symptoms fade quickly, patients still remain at high risk. As many as half a million Americans fall victim to strokes called transient ischemic attacks each year. Many people do not seek treatment because symptoms quickly vanish, usually within an hour. Farrukh Chaudhry researched that 10 to 15 percent of people that suffer from transient ischemic attacks would experience a full-blown stroke within a 3-month period. Furthermore, 40 percent of those strokes occurred within 24 hours of the mini stroke. Farrukh Chaudhry acknowledges that this research may show that it is crucial for patients to seek medical attention immediately after having a mini stroke.

When asked about his research, Farrukh Chaudhry was both pleased and concerned; “I am pleased that we researched this, because I think these facts can save multiple lives in the future. However, I know that we need to raise awareness of these findings so more people seek medical attention after suffering from transient ischemic attacks. It is troublesome to know these statistics, while knowing that most people will not seek medical assistance after suffering from a TIA. I hope that research continues to get published online and in various journals so more physicians will become aware of this growing problem. Physicians need to let those at risk of TIAs know about the high risk factors and encourage them to seek help immediately if they think they are a victim of one.”

Farrukh Chaudhry plans to conduct more research in the future on the topic along with his colleagues from Loyola University. Their research is currently published in the journal, Expert Review of Neurotherapeutics. “We will continue to research because we know how beneficial knowledge on this topic can be. TIAs can be extremely dangerous if left untreated. We want neurologists everywhere to provide their patients with the best medical assistance possible, and new information is always helpful,” stated Farrukh Chaudhry.
