Addison Green is a Master plumber who enjoys writing. He combines his skill as a wordsmith with his skills as a plumber in "The Green Plumber," a blog that is attached to his business website. He's been providing plumbing tips and insights in this manner for nearly seven years.

One of the most common themes in his blogs for several years now, have been green issues. Everyone is interested in doing what they can to lower their monthly energy bills, and upgrading plumbing systems in the home is a great way of doing that, he says. And it can have a direct impact on the environment at the same time.

Replacing conventional fixtures and appliances with water-saving devices is one step. But on his blog, Addison Green writes that most of us can take a significant first step through little strategies that don't require any new equipment or expense. "You can start by loading up the dishwasher," he wrote in one of his first blog posts on the subject. "You might think you're saving energy by hand-washing your dishes, but that is very short-term. In fact, you use a lot more water by hand-washing your dishes – a lot of it when you rinse. Automatic dishwashers, even conventional ones, use less hot water and energy than hand-washing does. You don't have to rinse dishes off first, either. So I always recommend saving yourself some work, and put as many of your dishes as possible into the washer – and of course, don't run it until it's full."

You can save water by shortening the length of your showers, too, he writes. "I'm the first to admit that it can be a luxurious indulgence to stay in the shower longer than you need to," he says. "But by keeping your showers short and sweet is much more sustainable. You can split the difference by installing a low-flow showerhead. They use up to fifty percent less water than older ones do, and with a modern low-flow showerhead you'll barely notice the difference."

The same goes with toilets. Conventional toilets use a lot of water with each flush, so Addison Green recommends upgrading your toilets to low-flow models.

Addison Green grew up around the plumbing business, and has been the owner of Green Plumbing in Detroit for many years.
