San Francisco, CA - It seems natural disasters have only increased in intensity these last years. As a nation, we were devastated when the city of Joplin was leveled by a tornado. Many in the nation mourned as New Orleans was flooded after Katrina. Most recently, super storm Sandy brought to life how vulnerable coastal cities are when storms approach with a fury.

Mayer Flaks has taken as many precautionary steps as possible to prepare for an emergency and hopes others will take similar measures. "We've taken for granted how powerful nature is. Humans have manipulated nature for our benefit and live in buildings that can be dangerous during a powerful storm," says Mayer Flaks. Indeed, while a steel beam may support a heavy roof, it can be removed and twisted if winds become fast enough.

"I know as a human I am prone to any number of circumstances but based off the recommendations of FEMA and other emergency preparedness organizations, I've planned for the basics," says Mayer Flaks. His homemade emergency kit includes many of the basics like sterile bandages, rubbing alcohol, and medical tape. However, Mayer Flaks is prepared with a needle and thread, duct tape, iodine, bottled water, and protein bars. In preparedness for a long emergency, he is prepared with a crank radio.

Living in the city, Mayer Flaks knows damage can be escalated because of the proximity of the buildings. Taking heed from emergency preparedness advice, Mayer Flaks is prepared to care for himself and, if necessary, others in an emergency. In addition to an emergency kit, Mayer Flaks plans to take a CPR class in the future.

Mayer Flaks assembled his emergency preparedness kit in reaction to tragedies witnessed around the country. Knowing that earthquakes are a true threat in California, he figured being prepared was next to common sense. He pushes for emergency preparedness for everyone whether they live in the city, suburbs, country.
