Understanding Prostate Cancer

An oncologist from the Prostate Seed Institute demystifies prostate cancer

Irving, TX – Given that prostate cancer usually develops much later in life, many people know very little about prostate cancer. The odds of developing prostate cancer currently stand at 1 out of 7. While this is a high figure, fewer men die of prostate cancer. Statistics give an estimate of about 1 in 38. Those that die having prostate cancer will most likely have succumbed to other complications and not the cancer itself. More than 2.5 million men in the U.S alone have gone on to survive this disease. It develops very slowly and patients experience minimal symptoms, with only about 8% reporting any significant symptoms.

“The populace needs to find out about this disease. It affects a good number of men and it should not be ignored,” says the oncologist. “Just because symptoms may be rare doesn’t mean it won’t cause problems.”

It is therefore best to look at it from all angles to understand it. The basic things to know are:

• What it is – It is a condition where damaged cells in the body do not die off and new cells continue forming even when the body doesn’t need them. The unneeded cells clump up and form a tissue mass and this is what is known as a tumor. Malignant or cancerous tumors are what are life-threatening but benign tumors are not. It spreads slowly in most men and many still get to live with it into old age.

• Prevalence –About 230,000 men receive a prostate cancer diagnosis in the U.S. every year.

• Who is at risk –It occurs more in men above 65 years of age. From around 50 years of age about a third of men will have tiny evidence of the presence of prostate cancer. By 75 years about half will see some changes to their prostate as a result of cancer.

“Like any other disease, those at risk need to get themselves checked,” explains the oncologist. “This is the best way to keep it in check.”
