Understanding Genomic Testing for Prostate Cancer

Dr. Echt explains the various types of genomic tests for prostate cancer.

Irving, Texas – October 18, 2019 – Genomic testing of the prostate helps to determine the behavior of prostate cancer. It looks at the genetic makeup of the cancer and predicts whether the disease is slow-growing or aggressive. Genomic testing can be carried out on the entire prostate or biopsy tissue.

“Genomic testing helps both patient and doctor to devise a strategy for managing their treatment,” explained Dr. Echt. "These tests are ideal for newly diagnosed patients with prostate cancer that is still localized, and those who have had surgery and want to know their risks of recurrence."

Here are some of the genomic tests available for prostate cancer:

• ProstaVysion – This genomic test checks the sequence of particular genes and provides a personalized genetic panel that will help determine the aggressiveness of the disease. It is carried out after a prostate cancer diagnosis. ProstaVysion uses biopsy tissue to predict the chances of metastasis. The test is suitable for men who opt for active surveillance.

• Oncotype Dx – Oncotype Dx test assesses the activity of specific genes in the tumor and assigns the Genomic Prostate Score to each. The score will predict the chances of disease aggression and progression to other body parts. It is used after the diagnosis of low-risk prostate cancer. Also ideal for those preferring active surveillance.

• Prolaris Test–It measures the rate at which cancer cells are multiplying to predict their aggressiveness. Prolaris test is used after low-risk prostate cancer diagnosis and uses tissue from radical prostatectomy and biopsy to predict biochemical recurrence, the likelihood of metastasis and possible death. It helps patients decide on the best treatment option or additional treatment after surgery.

“In prostate cancer, genomics looks at how particular sets of genes in the tumor function and interact,” continued Dr. Echt. "It is the activity of the genes that influence the tumor’s behavior, including how rapid its growth and progression will be. Through genomic testing, patients will know their risks and the treatment options available to them."
