Most people confronted with the question 'what is positive psychology' have simply no idea about it. The term psychology is very well known but it has connotations of dealing with a variety of mental problems. Positive psychology, on the other hand, is a relatively new offshoot of this science that focuses on what has gone right in a particular situation so that it can be encouraged further.

Positive psychology is only about a decade old but it has managed to generate a lot of interest among psychologists because of its ability to help create thriving communities by first helping individuals be well adjusted and properly functioning individuals and then members of a successful family. The aim of a positive psychologist is to find and nurture positives in an individual that enable that person to lead a completely fulfilling normal life.

Most people interested in knowing what is positive psychology are very pleased to find out that this is a science of well being as well as of optimal functioning not just of the individual but of the various groups and institutions that he or she is a member of.

An understanding of how positive emotions and individual traits work go a long way to creating many positive institutions in society. In the long term, it is this that makes like worth living.

The science of positive psychology was introduced in the year 2000 by the well known psychologist Martin Seligman as a means of supplementing the existing science of psychology. The emphasis on positive behaviors rather on deviant or negative ones is essential to promote overall mental health. However, the study of happiness is not a new one because philosophers and religious leaders over the ages have given this subject much thought, knowing very well that this is the cornerstone of a flourishing society.

There are a few traits that a positive psychologist aims to foster and strengthen in an individual. They include courage, compassion, creativity and integrity amongst others. People are encouraged to lead lives with moderation, self knowledge as well as a great degree of self control because this is the key to building better communities and institutions. It is beneficial for society as a whole if people live according to the principles of tolerance and teamwork.
