Home Comfort Experts Explains R-22, Presents Homeowner’s Alternatives

Following the phaseout of R-22, the refrigerant commonly known as Freon, HVAC specialists at Home Comfort Experts explains to homeowners their options for “recharging” their cooling systems.

[Mishawaka, 07/28/2017] - Home Comfort Experts, an authority in the HVAC industry, answers homeowners’ most pressing concern about R-22, following its phaseout. They address concerns such as price surges and alternatives to the refrigerant.

R-22, Explained

R-22 or “Freon” is a gas that is essential to charging air conditioning units. The chemical, however, is also a major cause of ozone layer depletion, prompting the Environmental Protection Agency to limit its production and distribution in 2004. The demand for the chemical did not wane, though, and due to the lack of availability, consumers saw a significant increase in its price.

As such, some companies turned to reclaiming R-22 from old systems and selling it at a comparatively low price. Home Comfort Experts warn, however, that this procedure is not only unethical but also poses damage risks to the HVAC equipment. Recovered refrigerants, after all, may still contain the contaminants the phaseout was trying to avoid.

In 2007, manufacturers introduced an alternative to R-22: the R-410A. Unlike its predecessor, R-410A did not produce hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), making it a more environment-friendly alternative. The new substance is also more efficient to use for heating and cooling systems, helping homeowners save on HVAC costs.

Facing the R-22 Challenge

Home Comfort Experts offers homeowners several options to solve the R-22 problem. One is to have the company recharge old systems using the old refrigerant (this option, however, can be costly as supply is limited). Another is to remove R-22 and use a substitute refrigerant, although the replacement may not perform as well as R-22 or R-410A. The third option is to update the household with R-410A-compatible equipment, which can be the most viable option for homeowners looking for long-term savings.

The homeowner’s best option will depend largely on the age and type of system installed in the home. The company advises homeowners to get in touch with its experts to understand their options further and make an informed decision.
