1. Permanent residence for non-Emiratis
SS Sheikh Mohammed approved a new card, which grants permanent residence to non-Emiratis in the UAE. Like the US green card, the "Gold Card" (it's the UAE, after all) will grant permanent status to investors and entrepreneurs. For starters, a batch of 6,800 investors who have made investments worth AED 100 billion will receive the Gold Card.


2. Closing a phone contract is now cheaper in the UAE
On March 20, a new rule was announced to facilitate the cancellation of mobile contracts in the UAE. According to the new law, customers will only have to pay the rental fee for one month, in case of closing the phone contract before the specified time. This is a relief, since previously; residents had to pay both the month and the rent for the remaining months specified in the contract.


Network providers have already applied the new rule to all new contracts. They are also working to introduce the new scheme into the existing contract before the end of the year.


3. Now it is easy to have a liquor license in Dubai
Previously, only a fixed amount of alcohol could be purchased based on the wage certificate produced. And getting a license was also a tedious process that required you to submit a NOC from your employer, boss, parent, or husband, along with a salary certificate showing a profit of over AED 3,000.


The rules have been simplified and now you only need four documents to obtain a liquor license. First, please send a copy of your Emirates ID, passport, visa and a passport size photograph. This is followed by an online payment of AED 270. Once the processing is done, you can get the license from a nearby MMI or East Africa store. To apply for the license, you must be over 21 and not Muslim.


4. Renew vehicle registration in Dubai without settlement of fines
Dubai Police launched a new initiative that allows motorists to renew vehicle registration without offsetting traffic fees. In addition, drivers who have not committed a traffic violation for three months get a 25% discount on the fine. Those who have clean records for six months get a 50% discount, while those with a clean record for one year get a 75% discount.


The new rule does not apply to drivers from other emirates or those with other RTA fines. Parking tickets and Salik will not be included as part of the initiative.
