Wisdom tooth is situated at the end of the jaw and in medical terminology it is also called third molar. Wisdom tooth appears last in the series and is often the cause of many dental issues. Wisdom tooth appears around the age of 15-25 years. There are two possible ways in which a wisdom tooth might grow:

1. Some may grow like regular teeth.

2. Some may become impacted.

Wisdom teeth can be beneficial if they are properly aligned and the necessity to remove them might not even occur. But such cases are very rare and it is always the misaligned ones that cause the most discomfort.

The appearance of wisdom tooth is very late and by the time they appear there is not much space left in the jaw to accommodate them. As a result they are often misaligned. Due to minimal space, many times wisdom teeth are trapped in the gums. In such a case it is called an impacted wisdom tooth. This causes pain and crowds the teeth leading to other dental problems. Sometimes a wisdom tooth is only partially impacted and a part of the tooth may extend through the gums. The space around such a tooth can grow bacteria that can cause infection and tooth decay.

Everybody has a wisdom tooth and most likely has to get it removed at some point of time. Very few people have wisdom tooth that causes minimal crowding in the jaw and doesn’t hurt them, but a lot of dentists will recommend that they be removed. The reason is because these teeth are very susceptible to cavities and are not easily cleanable. There is no proper age for removal of the wisdom tooth but most dentists suggest that it should be removed at a younger age since the healing process will be a lot quicker. Some dentists might even suggest removing it before it develops any kind of problems so that the removal is easier and less painful for the patient.

Many people ask if the removal of the wisdom tooth is a painful process. In fact removing your wisdom tooth is not something to be overly concerned about. Since everyone has to remove their wisdom tooth at some point of their life, there are a lot of oral surgeons who are very good at what they do.
